What are your plans for St. Patrick’s Day?

Even though St. Patrick’s Day isn’t the biggest holiday of the year, preparing for festivities (or avoiding streets with a lot of bars) can be stressful. Wouldn’t it be nice to get away for the holidays?

Sounds like you need a holiday cruise.

Holiday Cruising Basics

Holiday cruises are a great way to celebrate time with your family or friends while exploring the world. When you factor in all-inclusive packages and the ability to get from your party to your room with a short walk, a holiday cruise may sound like heaven.

However, before you mark your calendars, make a plan for booking a holiday cruise and what you will need to bring onboard.

When to Book? Unless you can score some radical last-minute deals, you should look into booking a holiday cruise a few months in advance. If you’re thinking about cruising for Christmas 2017, it’s not crazy to look at options now. (Sorry if you were really thinking about cruising for St. Patrick’s Day this year – but hey, there’s always next year!)

What to Budget? During the holidays, the price of everything goes up. Don’t book a cruise without also booking flights and accommodation to and from the cruise. With a lot of money at stake, you may also want to consider purchasing travel insurance.

What to Book? Consider the size of your party and the time you will want to spend in the same room together. While separate rooms may be just fine for any old vacation, a cabin might be ideal for larger family gatherings. (Ask yourself this: How many presents, holiday traditions, and family members can you squish into one room?)

Of course, holiday cruises often involve larger groups of people, which means that larger rooms tend to sell out faster. Jump on booking as soon as possible if you’re sure you want one.

Consider the size of the ship and type of cruise as well. If you’re not going to bring children along on the cruise, you may want to steer clear from larger ships that will mostly be families. If you do have children, look at the programs and services available for them.

Where Are You Going? It’s wonderful to go onshore during your vacation and experience a new culture… until you arrive and everything is closed for a holiday.

Think critically about the cruise’s itinerary. Does the country celebrate the holiday? How will their celebrations affect your vacation? Will you be able to conduct your holiday traditions and still be respectful of the culture?

What Are You Bringing? Once everything is booked and ready to go, it’s time to create a packing list! Think about your holiday traditions, and how you can bring these onboard. It is common for holiday travelers to decorate their cabins, and even bring a small fake Christmas tree or menorah for a perfect holiday touch.

If you’re cruising during a holiday like New Year’s Eve or St. Patrick’s Day, you might have a bottle of champagne or whiskey that you’ve been saving for the occasion. This may be okay, but check first with the cruise line about their policy for bringing on alcohol or large decorations.

Most holiday cruise travelers are on the ship to actually celebrate the holiday, so join in the festivities. Be sure to bring your favorite Christmas sweater or suit for the occasion.

Make sure you take care, though. Cruising during a holiday is a great way to make the day special, but with every cruise, there are risks involved. If you suffer an injury or accident while on your cruise, talk to a lawyer immediately.
